As a business leader, do you ever take a moment to stop and really think about your organization and simply ask, How did we get here?
Not in a bad way. You’re accomplishing things. You’re checking boxes. You’re meeting deadlines and taking care of your customers. From the outside, everything looks like it’s moving in the right direction.
But somewhere along the way, the work that once energized you has started to feel… routine. Like every day is just another part of a very long to do list.
Here’s the good news. I’ve had conversations with leaders in every industry who have admitted to feeling this way. They aren’t burned out because they don’t care. They’re tired because they’ve been giving so much of themselves that they’ve forgotten to reconnect with the reason they started in the first place.
That’s why it’s so important to pause every now and then and reignite your why.
Your Why Is More Than a Mission Statement
When people hear the word “purpose,” they often think of something grand or life-changing.
In reality, your why shows up in the small moments.
It’s the conversation with a customer that reminds you your work made a difference. It’s watching a team member grow into a better leader. It’s seeing a project come together because people chose collaboration instead of competition.
Those moments don’t happen by accident. They happen when people stay connected to the impact of what they do.
When we lose sight of that impact, work can quickly become a list of tasks instead of an opportunity to make a difference.
Pause Before You Push Forward
As leaders, our instinct is often to keep moving.
Another meeting.
Another sale.
Another deadline.
But what if the most productive thing you could do today was pause?
Ask yourself:
- Why did I choose this work?
- Who benefits because I show up each day?
- Am I spending my time on what matters most?
These aren’t questions you answer once at the beginning of your career. They’re questions worth revisiting again and again because your purpose continues to grow as you do.

Your Team Needs Purpose, Too
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that people want more than a paycheck. They want to know their work matters to you, to the organization, and to their customers.
As leaders, we have the privilege of helping people see the difference they make.
Celebrate progress—not just results.
Share stories of customers whose lives were impacted.
Recognize effort, kindness, creativity, and collaboration.
When people understand the “why” behind the work, engagement grows naturally. They don’t just complete tasks—they become invested in the mission.
Purpose has a way of bringing out the very best in people.
Growth Keeps Your Why Alive
One of the easiest ways to reconnect with your purpose is to keep learning.
Attend a conference.
Read a book that challenges your thinking.
Sometimes all it takes is hearing a new perspective. A powerful keynote or an interactive workshop can help teams step out of their daily routines, challenge old ways of thinking, and reconnect with the mission that brought them together. The best professional development doesn’t end when the event is over—it creates conversations and actions that continue long afterward.
Growth reminds us that there’s always another opportunity to improve—not because we aren’t good enough, but because we care enough to keep getting better.
